500D Cordura is enough for most backpacks. It is lighter and less bulky than 1000D, while still taking plenty of abuse. 1000D makes sense on the bottom or other spots that get dragged and scraped. It rarely needs to cover the entire bag.
What 500D and 1000D actually describe
Denier describes yarn linear density; it is not a complete fabric specification. CORDURA Classic fabrics use high-tenacity nylon 6,6 yarns and are offered in multiple deniers and constructions. Weave, coating, finish, yarn, and quality control all affect the result. Read the broader backpack material guide before comparing only one number.

A pack usually fails as a system. Poor seam allowance, misaligned reinforcement, damaged coating, or weak strap anchoring can defeat an expensive shell fabric. A well-designed 500D pack can outlast a poorly assembled 1000D pack. Check the handles and strap anchorss described in Where Backpacks Fail.
Using both can make sense
Use the lighter construction for most of the body and a heavier or doubled material at the bottom, exposed corners, and tool-contact areas. This puts extra abrasion resistance where it can earn its weight instead of making every panel equally heavy.
Do not stop at the denier
Ask for the fiber, fabric family, denier, weave, finish, coating or laminate, finished weight, and relevant test method. “Cordura” without a specific fabric article is incomplete, and “1000D” without identifying the fiber and construction is even less useful.
