Laser-cut MOLLE is flatter and cleaner. Sewn webbing is easier to inspect and usually easier to repair. Both work when they are made properly. Bad material, weak stitching, or incorrect spacing will ruin either one.

MOLLE and PALS are not the same thing

PALS is the attachment grid; MOLLE is a broader load-carrying system that uses that interface. Commercial “laser-cut MOLLE” generally recreates the attachment slots by cutting them into a laminate or reinforced panel instead of sewing horizontal webbing rows. Laser cutting moves stress into the panel

Each slot interrupts the panel. A good design uses a material intended for cut openings, leaves enough material between slots, and reinforces the panel’s attachment to the bag. Thin unsupported fabric with decorative slots is not equivalent to a laminate made for the job.

Traditional webbing exposes its workmanship

Sewn PALS makes spacing and stitching visible. Look for straight rows, consistent bartacks, enough thread engagement, and secure ends. Webbing adds material and water-holding surface area, but damage is often easier to understand and repair.

Spacing matters

Test the exact pouch and attachment method. Slots that are too tight can abrade straps or make weaving difficult; loose or irregular spacing can allow movement. Follow the MOLLE setup guide and weave every row instead of bridging across the panel.

Which one should you choose?

Use laser-cut panels when low profile and reduced surface bulk matter and the laminate has a credible specification. Use sewn webbing when inspection, broad compatibility, and repairability are higher priorities.
